Antique Planox Magnetic Stereoscope in Good Condition. France, Circa 1900

This fascinating article is a Planox magnetic stereoscope (also known as stereoscopic viewer), made in France in the early 20th century and really well preserved. It is quite an ancient item that has survived to our days in excellent condition and amazingly good working order. The stereoscope is made of mahogany wood with black bakelite eyepieced and accessories; all its component parts are original. It comes with a complete collection of stereoscopic slides, ready to be viewed. Though at first sight this stereoscope is similar to other designs from the period, this particular model presents an interesting feature: the slides are charged by an ingenious magnetic mechanism. In order to do that, the slides include a thin metal strip, known as a barrette, on top. A lever located on the right side of the Planox slides down when the viewer wishes to see another image. In doing so, the preceding image is brushed off the magnets and they then lift the new image. The magnificent condition the slides are in lets the user view them easily and enjoy the excellent performance of the mechanism. While the bottom part of the stereoscope is designed to store the slides, the top is dedicated to their viewing. The translucent glass pane attached to the back allows for natural light to illuminate the image. The solid mahogany wood remains in great condition, with no flaws or worn parts. If we open the back of the stereoscope we will see a paper sheet stack to the inner frame, with the instructions for use printed in French. Over the eyepieces there is a small metal plate with the inscription Stéréoscope Magnétique PLANOX and the image of a magnet.Because of its rareness and excellent working order, this antique magnetic stereoscope deserves a honor place in a good collection of photo-related antiques.
