Great camera by prestigious Leica brand, one of the most important brands in the field of photojournalism. Some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century used a Leica to take their photographs: Henri Cartier-Besson, Alexander Korda Currently, Leica makes precision optical instruments and cameras. The company also makes topographic instruments and medical surveying material. The first prototypes of these cameras were made in 1913 by Oskar Barnak, in the German city of Wetzlar. It was in 1923 when Ernst Leitz company (Barnaks boss) decided to make the 23 definitive prototypes to test the objectives designed by the firm. This particular camera is in great condition and working order. It has no missing parts and all its components work fluidly and softly, though the camera has not been tested with film. This is model III-A, made of silvery metal and black material simulating leather: a real classic. The top shows the engraved logo, the name of the company (Ernst Leitz, Wetzlar, D.R.P.) and the serial number: 156559. The great condition of the metal is very remarkable, with an attractive matt finish and no trace of pitting. The objective is also made by Ernst Leitz and shows the inscription Summar f = 5 1:2 (the lenss diameter and the magnification), as well as the serial number: 256251. At the bottom, inside the removable base we can see a label with a warning telling the user not to draw the beginning of the film more than 10 cm when it is been put in its place. Overall, this camera is a real classical piece in the field of photojournalism, as well as a beautiful antique which can still take great charming photographs.
