Antique Officer’s Clock with Original Case. France, 19th Century

Antique officer’s or carriage clock with original case, made in France in the 19th century and in very good condition and working order. The clock’s box is made of brass with glass side panels, original from the time and finely preserved. At the front side we can see the dial printed on a white porcelain plate, with poire hands and a secondary hand to adjust the alarm. The clock's alarm train has a safety system to prevent the spring from being forced. The plate shows some tiny hairlines at the bottom which do not interfere at all in the charming and beautiful look of the clock.

These devices appeared in France in the early 19th century, the first being the one made by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1812 for Napoleon. They were called ‘carriage clocks’ because they were commonly used in carriages and stagecoaches. These clocks mount platform-escapement movements instead of pendulums, and top handles to carry them easily. They are also known as ‘officer’s clocks’. The one which can be seen in the photographs preserves the original leather case, with carrying strap and front opening for consulting the time.

Special and very attractive, this antique officer’s or carriage clock with original case will be the best addition for a great collection.
