Antique Maréchaussée Troop Saber - Sword, Model 1783. France, Circa 1790
Antique Maréchaussée troop saber sword model 1783, forged in France circa 1790 and entirely original from the time. This is quite a beautiful piece, in very good condition. The twine is slightly loose, but this detail does not interfere at all in the integrity and aesthetic of the saber. This weapon was designed and forged for the Maréchaussée, an institution of the time of Louis XVI, the ancient regime previous to the Revolution. It was a corps composed of mounted soldiers which were in charge of ensuring public security and order. This corps would eventually be substituted by the gendarmerie. The saber mounts a brass hilts with gorgeous curved quillons and wooden grip covered by a brass twine. The weapon comes with its original scabbard, made of black leather and in amazing condition. This piece preserves the polished brass locket, chape and ring; the metal’s shiny finish makes a lovely contrast with the deep black color of the leather.
This antique Maréchaussée troop saber model 1783 is a real museum piece, perfect to become part of the collection of a great fan of historic weapons.
