Antique Continental Typewriter. Working. Germany, Circa 1930
Antique Continental typewriter made in Germany circa 1930 and in exceptional condition. As well as boasting an imposing look, this machine works perfectly and can be used to type documents. It mounts German keyboard; the keys have black background and white characters, with the classic nickel-plated reinforcement ring. The typewriter’s body has a fine glossy-black enameled finish in optimal condition too. Over the carriage and at the front we can see two greatly-preserved decals with the brand logo CONTINENTAL. The metal mobile parts are also in good condition: they look polished, shiny and provide a fluid and soft operation. Overall, this typewriter shows a magnificent look and a superb working order which turn it into a really attractive piece, ready to be used.
Every lover of office antiques and old-time machines will appreciate this antique Continental typewriter, as gorgeous as functional.
Continental Typewriter - History
Continental typewriters were manufactured and sold by Wanderer-Werke, a German company founded in 1896 as Winklhofer & Jaenicke by J. B. Winklhofer and R. A. Jaenicke. In the beginning, the business made bicycles and machinery tools; but in the early 20th century they started to manufacture typewriters, cars and military vehicles. In 1911 the company adopted the Wanderer name; this word means ‘rover’, which was the name of the first bicycle designed by John Kemp Starley (credited as the inventor of this vehicle). The first Continental typewriter was launched in 1903; in the following decades, the company produced different models of the series. Probably the most famous one was the Klein-Continental, a functional portable model produced between 1929 and 1948.
