Antique Continental Typewriter. Germany, Circa 1930
Antique Continental typewriter made in Germany circa 1930, greatly preserved and in excellent working order. There is a very special feature which makes this item stand out over similar pieces, and this is its keyboard. It is for the German market and includes keys with symbols of different coins and mathematical fractions. This means that it could be specifically designed for an office where economic documents are typed, such as a bank or financial institution. This machine has black-enameled metal body with side and rear openings which make it lighter and let us see the inner mechanism, intricate and fascinating. Over the carriage and at the front we can see the brand name CONTINENTAL in golden lettering, almost complete. The keys have black background and ochre-colored symbols, and mount the classic nickel-plated reinforcement rings. All the typewriter’s component parts are original and remain in striking condition, turning its use into a real pleasure for its owner.
This antique Continental typewriter is a real collector’s piece, both for its excellent condition and original quality.
Continental Typewriter - History
Continental typewriters were manufactured and sold by Wanderer-Werke, a German company founded in 1896 as Winklhofer & Jaenicke by J. B. Winklhofer and R. A. Jaenicke. In the beginning, the business made bicycles and machinery tools; but in the early 20th century they started to manufacture typewriters, cars and military vehicles. In 1911 the company adopted the Wanderer name; this word means ‘rover’, which was the name of the first bicycle designed by John Kemp Starley (credited as the inventor of this vehicle). The first Continental typewriter was launched in 1903; in the following decades, the company produced different models of the series. Probably the most famous one was perhaps the Klein-Continental, a practical portable model that was manufactured between 1929 and 1948.
