Gorgeous antique wood sculpture of the Madonna and Child in antique niche, made in Spain circa 1900 and in good condition. This great figure is carved by hand on a solid wooden block and has a beautiful polychrome tempera finish with gold-leaf details. The polychrome is finely preserved, though we can distinguish some small flaws. This is logical, considering the ancient age and the fragility of the piece. Though the figure would improve with a professional restoration, currently is still a gorgeous piece with all the charm provided by the patina of time. Both figures have crystal eyes and gilt metal coronas, the Virgins one being bejeweled. The polychrome finish is really beautiful, with the soft tone of the skin and the delicate and lovely colors of the garments standing out. The cloak which covers the Virgins head and the Childs robe are delicately carved by a skillful artist. The hand-carved wooden niche is an exceptional place to show the sculpture, as it elevates it and provides it with depth. It is in great condition and includes a bottom drawer. The background is covered in ancient brocade, also finely preserved.
