This antique leather-bound book was written by Nicolas Lemery and published in France in 1693. Its complete title is: Cours de Chymie contenant la maniere de faire les operations qui font en usage dans la Medicine, par un methode facil. This can be translated as Course of Chemistry containing the way of performing classic medical operation with an easy method. So this is a course of chemistry designed to pathologists (doctors and pharmacists) intended to make things easier to them. The book is gorgeous and is very well preserved though being more than 300 years old. This work was written by a great scientist from the period: Nicolas Lemery. Born in 1645 and dead in 1715, Lemery was a French chemist who pioneered the chemistry of acids and bases. He also established the famous classification of substances as animal, vegetal and mineral, and explained certain weather-related events and even earthquakes. He was known for being totally against alchemy; he described it as the art without art and the principle of lie. The book that we can see in the photographs was first published in 1675 and for one hundred years remained as a referent work in the field of chemistry. The book is printed in black ink on white paper and preserves all its pages. The pages with etchings are quite remarkable; the drawings depict the laboratory apparatus needed to perform the experiments. There is also a drop-down sheet with the explanation of some chemical symbols. The brown leather-covered binding is in good condition; we can see the golden title engraved in the spine together with a series of decorative motives. This complete course of chemistry is doubly interesting, for its fascinating content and its ancient age. Measurements: Width: 5.1 in / 13 cm. Height: 7.3 in / 19 cm.
