This vintage calculator is a MADAS manufactured in Switzerland in 1913. It is a historic machine, a real icon in the history of 20th century arithmometers. The name MADAS is composed of the initials of the functions this machine can perform. In German, Multiplicier, Automat Dividieren, Addieren, Subtrahieren; In English, Multiplication, Automatic Division, Addition, Substraction. MADAS. The automatic division function was the bigger innovation that these models included, a real novelty for the time. Thanks to this function the user can performs divisions automatically, just turning the crank until he or she hears the bell that indicates the end of the operation.The firm that manufactured these calculators was founded in Zurich in 1891 by Hans Walter Egli. MADAS calculating machines derive directly from Colmars arithmometer. The first model could was launched in 1908 with the great innovation stated before. Later, the company also included an automatic multiplication function, an even more important innovation. MADAS calculating machines were solid and reliable, and their great quality got the firm to keep on manufacturing new models until the 1950s.This lovely machine is in good condition and perfect working order. It still keeps part of the black enamel that originally covered its brass front. It is an eight-digit calculator, something not very common for this kind of devices. At the bottom left corner of the front side we can see the calculators serial number: 9335, together with various inscriptions about the palce of making and the manufacturing company. The item has its original black-lacquered iron cover; we can see most of the original red and white label with the brands logo printed at the front.This MADAS calculator is a piece worthy of a museum of modern technology.
