Attractive vintage Lipsia calculator made in Germany in the first quarter of the 20th century (1920-30s). This kind of machines were quite popular at those times; they were all based in the pinwheel calculating machine that Odhner designed in the late 19th century. The calculator boasts a sober and elegant design, is quite good condition and in good working order. It shows some signs of the trace of time, nevertheless the machine looks good and is a decorative piece, full of vintage charm.Lipsia calculators were produced and commercialized by the Otto Holzapfel & Cie. Rechenmaschinenfabrik, founded in Leipzig in 1914 by Otto Holzapfel. This entrepreneur had already worked for companies such as Brunsviga and Triumphator so he decided to use his experience to establish his own business in partnership with Paul Bastanier. Their Lipsia-0 and 11R calculators were very successful as their quality was similar to their competitors, but were much cheaper. After World War II, the factory remained in the GDR and the administration expropriated and eventually deleted the company. This particular machine stands on a black-lacquered solid wooden plank. It has black-enameled metal sheet body and engraved numbers and inscriptions, painted in white and red. It can perform the four basic arithmetical operations and we can read so on the right side of the calculators, beside de digit levers. The name of the calculator, Lipsia, is also engraved and painted white on the left side of the machine. This vintage calculator is a charming piece that will delight the best collector or lover of antique machines.
