This curious calculator is a quite rare machine a Produx-Multator made in Germany in 1956. Though it is very similar to the classic pinwheel calculators that became so popular in the 20th century, it actually works with a different system known as adapting segment system. The calculator is in very good condition and works perfectly, letting the user perform easily the four basic arithmetic operations. It boasts an attractive design with hammered grey-enameled metal sheet case and clear white numbers.Produx brand was registered by company Otto Meuter & Sohn from Hamburg (Germany). Produx calculators started being commercialized in 1954, and Produx-Multator was the name of the system they operated with. This adapting segment system was developed by the company in order to manufacture cheaper calculators that would compete with the classic pinwheel models. They were advertised as Rechenmaschinen für den kleinen Mann (calculators for the little man). In Germany and America these calculators were sold under the name Multator, while in France, Belgium and the Netherlands they were named Multical. With the advent of electronic machines, Produx ceased producing mechanical calculators in 1972.Though they were really cheap and popular machines, nowadays these calculators are quite rare pieces. The one we can see in these images works perfectly and is greatly preserved. The machine stands on four wide rubber legs that provide it with stability, and has red and black plastic pointers and handles. The metal levers and cranks provide a fluid and soft operation that turns the manipulation of this calculator into a real pleasure for the user.Because of its rareness and great condition, this vintage calculator deserves a place of honor in the most complete collection.Measurements: Width: 7.4 in/19 cm.
