This solid and attractive machine is a Melitta calculator, a device that works with a pinwheel system in very good condition. The mechanism and levers of this calculator are well preserved so the machine works wonderfully and lets the user perform arithmetic operations just like new. The calculator has a black-enamel cast-iron case that stands on four round legs, and mobile parts made of silvery metal. The black, red and white bakelite pieces are also original and remain in good condition. This machine is quite similar in design to other calculators from the first half of the 20th century. They all work with a pinwheel system, the one that W.T. Odhner designed in the late 19th century based in Leibnizs arithmometer. Melitta calculators were produced by Mercedes, starting in 1926; Walther also commercialized them at the same time. After the end of World War II the factories were destroyed, but only for a short time; Walter established again in West Germany and Melitta opened a new factory in East Germany, this time under state control. This particular calculator was made during these years. Its sober design and impeccable operation are typical features of the machines manufactured in the Soviet factories. The good condition of its enamel finish, with bright red and white numbers, is quite remarkable. At the back of the calculator we can see a metal plate with the model (III/16) and the serial number 111159 engraved in their respective boxes. Last but not least, at the front of the machine we can see the logo with the brand name, MELITTA, engraved and painted in clear white lettering. This Melitta calculator is a real survivor that has come to us in excellent condition. It will surely stand out in any elegant study or room.
