Wonderful North American Rapid pinwheel calculator, made in Philadelphia between 1925 and 1930. This calculating machine is in really good condition and works perfectly, letting the user perform the four basic arithmetic operations. The calculator stands on a solid wooden base and comes with its original protecting case, made of black-enameled metal sheet and decorated with thin golden lines. The machine has been thoroughly restored in order to show off the gorgeous look that we can appreciate in the photographs. At the front side of the calculator, to the right we can see a black and golden metal plate with the inscription THE RAPID CALCULATOR CO. PHILADELPHIA PENNA. This indicates that the machine was manufactured by the company of the same name, founded by the German immigrant Otto Schuman. Schuman arrived to the USA in 1909 and founded the company in 1919. He applied for U.S. patents on calculating machines in 1919 and 1924. The calculators made after this year use a clearing mechanism for the entry levers different from the one used in former models. The company name can also be seen engraved and painted white in the metal sheet, to the left of the digit levers. Over this inscription there is also a circular mark with the words MADE IN USA. The metal sheet is enameled in black with white numbers and silvery metal mobile parts. The cranks have black bakelite handles and the pointers are made of metal. The wooden plank that acts as a base for the calculator is in good condition, and the same can be said about the metal protecting case. In general, this lovely North American calculator is a reliable and decorative piece with a very special nostalgic charm.
