This beautiful calculator is a German pinwheel design, in perfect working order. It is a Schubert calculator, a machine that lets the user perform the four basic arithmetic operations fluidly and accurately. Its metal-sheet case has been fully restored: the dark red enameled finish has been applied at a later date, and the numbers and signs have also been painted in a fine golden color. The piece boasts an attractive and original look, with the red enamel creating a nice contrast with the metal mobile parts and the bone-colored bakelite markers. The calculator works wonderfully and is original from the 1950s. It boasts a classic design that turns it into a very decorative piece. Schubert calculators were designed and produced by Emil Schubert, an engineer that started his career in 1911 designing the famous Thales calculator. In the 1930s Schubert lost control of his business but in 1938 he started a new firm, this time under his own name. After World War II the company resumed the production and kept active until the late 1960s. Schubert calculators are renowned for their reliability and good operation, something evident in the machine we can see in these images. The brand logo is engraved and enameled at the front of the calculator, to the left of the digit levers. At the back of the machine we can see a metal plate attached to the iron base; it shows the engraved serial number CRV 65L317. The plate also bears the printed brand name, Schubert, and the inscription Made in Germany. Every lover of mechanical antiques will appreciate this Schubert calculators quality and good working order: a real 20th century classic.
