Sober Schubert Windlass Calculator in superb condition. Germany, 1950's

Attractive mechanical calculator made in Germany in the 1950s by Schubert. This machine is model DRW and has pinwheel mechanism, similar to that invented by W. T. Odhner in the late 19th century which was in its turn inspired in Leibnizs arithmometer. Its design is typical of the calculating machines from those times and preserves all the charm that characterizes turn-of-the-century industrial mechanical items. The calculator works wonderfully and lets the user perform the four basic arithmetical operations with total precision. All the component parts move fluidly, turning the operation into a real pleasure for the user. At the front of the machine, just to the left we can see the elegant Schubert logo engraved in the metal and painted White. This company was founded in Rastatt, Germany in 1911 by Emil Schubert, a former Triumphator man. The first calculator produced by the firm was the famous Thales model, a real icon among the arithmometers made in the first half of the 20th century. In the 1930s Schubert lost control of his company but after the war he re-started the business under his own name. The calculator that we can see in the images is a good example of the quality that characterized these machines. This fine calculator has a hammered grey-enameled finish, original from the time and in wonderful condition. The mobile component parts are made of chromed metal, while the knobs and pointers are made of green bakelite. The crank has a solid wooden handle with a great shiny transparent finish. At the back of the machine we can see a metal plate attached to the case with the engraved model name (DRW) and serial number: 157893. The companys name and city are also printed in green lettering. This stunning antique calculator preserves all its original splendor and works really fine, being worthy of a great technology museum.
