This awesome machine is a pinwheel calculator made in the USA in 1916. The calculator is in great condition and works, making it possible to perform the four basic arithmetical operations with reliable results. It preserves all its original component parts; the oak wooden plank on which the calculator stands is original too. In general this calculator is a gorgeous and antique piece, a historic machine full of personality and charm. At the front of the machine, to the right of the digit levers we can see a metal plate with the models name: The Marchant, and information about the manufacturing company and the patent numbers. The Marchant Calculating Machine Co. Was founded in 1911 by Rodney and Alfred Marchant in Oakland, California. They manufactured mechanic (and later electromechanical) calculators. Their machines were quite renowned for their reliability. The first models (like the one we can see in the photographs) were based in Odhners arithmometer, but in 1918 they designed a new system that became a sales success. This particular model is a great example of their quality and beautiful products. It has a black-enameled metal-sheet case with engraved and white-painted numbers. It has silvery-metal mobile parts and the knobs are made of black bakelite. At the back of the machine we can also see the engraved serial number Nº 71334. Stack to one side of the wooden base there is a paper label with instructions (SIX DONTS) to use the calculator. As lovely as nostalgic, this The Marchant calculator will surely shine in the most elegant study.
