This curious mechanic calculator is a Brunsviga IV in working order, a rare model made in Germany in the 1940s. The calculator shows a very simple design, with no engraved or painted numbers and with an event metal-sheet case. The metal bears a sober hammered grey finish and is a simple and functional machine. In spite of its basic look, this calculator can perfectly perform arithmetic operations with reliable results. The machine is well preserved and keeps all its original component parts. The item that we can see in the images is a pinwheel calculator. This system was developed by W. T. Odhner in the late 19th century basing on Leibnizs original arithmometer (16th century). At the front side we can see a metal plate with the printed logo and brand name, BRUNSVIGA. This name was adopted as their brand name by Grimme, Natalis & Co., a factory located in Braunschweig, Germany. In 1892 the firm acquired the patents of the Odhner calculator and starting producing it under the Brunsviga name (Latin for Braunschweig). In 1921 the firm was renamed Brunsviga Maschinenwerke AG. This great-looking machine is a good example of Brunsviga calculators quality and reliability. The enameled metal case is in good condition and the same can be said about the silvery-metal mobile component parts: they only show slight signs of the trace of time and use. At the machines base we find the engraved serial number 239381, and at its back we can see the name BRUNSVIGA printed in big white capital letters. As simple as sturdy, this antique calculator is an amazing example of office machines made in the first half of the 20th century.
