Original Buffalo Horn Brush Jar. China, 20th Century. Hand Carved Decoration

Fine brush and pencil jar carved from a real piece of buffalo horn. It is a very exotic item, in good condition and profusely decorated with hand-carved traditional motives. Its wonderful carving decoration matches perfectly the materials intrinsic beauty: its shape is irregular and wavy and boasts nice color shades all over its surface. The jar dates from the 20th century and is quite well preserved, being the perfect item for an elegant desk because of its original quality and exotic appearance. The piece takes advantage of the irregular horn and enhances its shapes with carvings and relieves. The materials colors go from the deepest black tone to a gorgeous ochre color, light and shiny. These colors enhance the carvers work and provide it with light and movement. The carvings are delicately performed with an accurate and precise technique that reveals a great artists hand. The decoration depicts two traditional scenes with several male figures under a leafy canopy of trees. At the bottom we can see two different scenes. One of them shows two sitting figures looking at grid board; one of them is pointing at it with his finger. The other picture shows two characters sitting on the ground that seem to be chatting. At their backs we can see an impressive bamboo forest, and other trees with twisted branches and leafy canopies. On the other hand, at the jars base we can see a carved signature composed of four ideograms inserted into a square frame.
