This beautiful wooden chest, wide and decorative, comes from China and was manufactured between 1920 and 1930. It is in strikingly good condition, with no broken or cracked parts, and outside is completely covered by detailed hand-carved motives. The chest is made of sandal wood, an exotic and aromatic noble wood traditionally used to make luxurious and stylish pieces. It is rectangular in shape and keeps the original lock in perfect working order. The key is not the original one: it has been specifically made so its owner can lock the chest. This articles big size let the carver display his or her skill performing delicate traditional scenes. The one depicted in the front side shows two mounted fighters in the middle of a battle. At the back we can see a lovely oriental landscape. The chests sides are especially attractive as they are adorned with great carved handles in the shape of dragons. At the back we can see a simpler scene depicting three male characters; the one to the right seems to be some kind of weight lifter. The wooden lid is decorated with a curious carved scene depicting a rocky mountain landscape with a castle turret to the left. There are three figures in the scene: the one to the left is a headless man who is holding a sword and is accompanied by a lion. To the right we can see two elder men dressed in traditional costumes; one of them is looking at the sky, where a big strange bird is flying. The inner sides of the chest show clean and light wood planks; the piece also preserves the original brass hinges and attachments.
