Exotic Chinese Carving in Solid Wood Gilded, Handmade. 1950's-60's

This exotic wooden piece, hand-carved and decorated with golden paint, was made probably in the 50's or 60's. It is a typical example of Chinese craft. As well as the high relief carving, this item also shows deep woodcuts which make a beautiful lattice, which provide an attractive filigree look and are light and harmonious. The carvings circular shape, typically Eastern, is original and very decorative, and makes of this item an interesting piece of traditional Chinese art. The piece shows a scenery in which we can see several figures, all of them men, in which seems to be a leafy forest with different kinds of plants. The men wear all traditional Chinese medieval clothes, and they have long beards and big crowns, except for a boy located in the centre of the scene. He is pushing a wheelbarrow with what seems to be a bonfire, and is wearing plane workers clothes. He has a shaven head, no beard and is wearing a cheerful smile. At the top of the circle we can see three figures and at the bottom there is another one who is riding a squirrel-looking animal. In the left side there are two big birds with their wings open, maybe a herons or storks. The figures clothes and hats suggest they could be gods or maybe important personalities (perhaps emperors), who are enjoying eternal rest in Paradise. The scene is relaxed and harmonious, and transmits a feeling of peace and happiness. The forest that surrounds the figures is leafy and is carved in a very realistic way, especially the flower tree in the top right corner. The circle is also surrounded by little clouds, which reinforces the theory of the celestial scene. The carving is hand-made on solid wood, which afterwards has been decorated with golden paint, shiny and clear. At the rear the wooden is painted with dark red lacquer. Overall, this piece is a good example of Eastern craft, which depicts an attractive scene with high detail and shows a great ornamental interest. It is an article which will look great into any showcase or shelf meant to display the most exotic antiques. Measurements: 360 mm diameter.
