Fine and delicate Chinese ox bone figure made in the 19th century. It is made of real noble "ox bone" and carefully hand-carved, with a great attention to detail. The figure stands on a discreet wooden base, with a circular shape and dark finish which makes a lovely contrast with the ox bones light color. The sculpture depicts a male figure with a long goatee and kind expression, dressed in traditional clothes and holding a fly swat. Hanging on his back there is a scabbard which contains a sword. The man is one of the Chinese Immortals, more specifically the one named Lü Donbing. The Immortals are a group of eight gods in Chinese mythology, who usually are depicted in group, each one holding specific powers. Lü Donbing, the immortal depicted in this figure, is the most popular of those gods. Though the Immortals head is Zhongli Quan, Lü Donbing is considered the actual chief of the group. In this sculpture he is wearing the typical characters clothes, which correspond to a wise man. He is also holding his traditional items: a fly swat and a sword, meant to frighten the evil away. This figure is standing in the typical position in which Chinese imagery usually portrays this Immortal: he is slightly curved to one side (something which provides the character with liveliness and reality), and his face is showing a kind and thoughtful expression. The man is touching his goatee, an act that suggests wisdom and concentration. The carving work is neat and precise, showing the real good performance accomplished by the artist. Some parts of the sculpture have not only been carved but are also painted with thin strokes of black paint, in order to highlight them: the goatee, the hair, the fly swats tassel and the lower part of the figure. Two deep and tiny black points simulate the pupils and bring the eyes to life. With all these details, the small ox bone figure comes to life and acquires a greater beauty, turning itself into a lovely decorative article and an interesting Chinese antique, which has also a deep mythological and spiritual meaning. Measurements: 84 mm width (base) x 280 mm height.
