Lovely and decorative Chinese tray made in the 1st third of the 20th century. The tray is made of solid carved and lacquered wood, with a bright red color finish. The edges of the sides are painted gold. The bottom of the tray and the sides are profusely carved with filigree designs, depicting a typical Eastern decorative motive. The carving of the bottom shows two depths; there is a base with subtle relieve, and on top of it there are five carved pieces: a central oval and four triangular corners. These pieces are carved depicting an abstract motive with some floral details, while the sides show a natural design of flowers and leaves. The tray is completely lacquered in a bright red color, and the paint has remained as deep as bright as the first day. The Chinese lacquering technique is a millenary art, and a high-quality lacquered item can have up to one hundred layers of lacquer. This tray is a fine example of this techniques beauty which seems so Oriental to us, and the lacquering is made with the same care and skill as the carvings that cover the tray. The rear is also lacquered, and there is a delicate drawing on it (probably performed with a punch) which depicts a simple Oriental landscape. In this landscape we can see the border of a lake with a stair and high trees; in front of the shore there is an island with a small pagoda. There is a figure rowing in a boat, maybe leaving the island. In the background, some impressive mountains adorn the horizon. The simplicity of the drawing is remarkable, especially because the artist was so skilful as to create such a magic and spiritual ambient with only a few lines. In essence, this is an ancient object which really breathes art; a lovely work of Chinese art which will stand out in the most complete collection of Oriental antiques.
