Stylized ivory pagoda from the 19th century which comes from China. It is a decorative and religious item, and behind the upper doors there is a small figure depicting Buda in an attitude of meditation. The pagoda is made up of many small and delicate ivory pieces, which all together form a tower-shaped structure. Every piece has been delicately hand-carved. The pagoda is in very good condition: the base is slightly loose but can be easily repaired. At the top of the building we can see a pair of doors, with engravings depicting the figures of two wise men in an attitude of meditation. Behind these doors rests the figure of Buda. The doors are also in very good condition, although the shutting piece is missing. The thorough carving work is highly remarkable in this part of the sculpture, from the slim railings to the small door knobs. The figure of Buda is also very attractive, and so is the thoughtful expression which appears on the wise mans face. The ivory plates are hand-carved depicting reliefs on different subjects. As it was stated before, the pagodas doors show the figures of two wise men or dignitaries, while the rest of the sculpture bears carvings with floral and vegetal motives. Among them we can see some images of birds. They are very probably representations of the Chinese Phoenix, also called Fenghuang, the king of birds in Chinese mythology. This animal appears on the pagodas roof and also on the base. This beautiful article is undoubtedly an original and decorative item, full of charm and spirituality, which will stand out on the most elegant rooms mantelpiece or showcase.
