Fine Chinese card case made to keep visit cards. It is made of sandal wood and the outside is profusely hand-carved. This is an antique item which was made for export in the 19th century. This objects small size has not been a barrier for the artist to cover the surface with many delicate carvings. The sandal wood is an excellent base for the work, and we can see clearly the results of this work thanks to the card cases great condition. Each millimeter of the wood has been decorated with carvings, from the sides to the narrow edges of the case and the cover. The decoration depicts a series of traditional scenes, typical of Chinese imagery. We can see some pagoda-shaped structures or buildings in the middle of a leafy forest, full of trees and plants. The buildings show all their parts in detail: railings, roofs, pillars and stairs. They are inhabited by some human figures which form groups and talk, make business or just pass along. The delicate carving work is really attention-drawing, and even the characters facial figures can be seen in such a small surface. The trees flowers and leaves are also appealing because of their fine making. The sandal wood is well preserved and the case has no dents or broken parts. The surface boasts a beautiful orange-brown color, typical of this kind of wood. The card case is complete and has not been repaired, and the carvings lack no detail. The top is actually a cover and can be removed to let us see the thin slot meant to house the cards. This lovely pieces beauty and exoticism turn it into a great present for anybody who can appreciate the most delicate and exclusive antiques. Measurements: 57 mm width x 97 mm height.
