Fine Chinese jewel case made of rosewood in the 19th century. This articles different parts are made of solid wood and the sides, corners, base and lid have been profusely hand-carved. The carving work reveals the hand of an excellent artist. The jewel case is in very good condition, with no broken or missing parts, and keeps its original lock and key so it can be used to store jewels. This article is as secure as the first day of use, and also preserves all its original charm. Its inside is lined by red velvet, somewhat worn but truly original.The beautiful rosewood planks this article is made of boasts a nice light orange-pink color which turns the jewel case into a very attractive piece. The sides bear a series of deep-relief carvings, deeply performed with full detail. All of them depict traditional scenes, with male characters wearing oriental clothes and performing different actions in the middle of leafy forest full of flowery trees. We can also see some Chinese-style buildings carved on the wood: small pagodas and temples where the characters dwell.The lid bears the biggest and more detailed carving of the case. It depicts a big forest with enormous trees, among which there are some oriental buildings. At the top, just in the middle we can see three characters standing by a railing, while at the bottom there is a group of elderly men that seem to be praying or meditating. It is a beautiful scene, especially because of the great detail used to carve the trees leaves, branches and flowers. The cases corners and the base, as well as the lids edge, have been also adorned with geometrical carved motives.The jewel case stands on four wooden legs which provide it with lightness and style.
