Impressive engraving original from 1745 made by the famous English engraver James Basire, in good condition. The engraving is complete and though it shows some signs of the trace of time and old restorations, it is well preserved and boasts an exceptional beauty. The plan depicts the town of Lerida (Spain) and its surroundings, including river Segre, during the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1713). Printed on the paper we can see the straight lines that depict the approaches made before the city by the French and Spanish armies during the siege that started in October, 1707. The description of the plan can be read in the text printed at the bottom margin The War of Spanish Succession took place amongst the supporters of French Bourbon king Phillip of Anjou and the followers of the Archduke Charles of Austria. During the war, the city of Lerida supported the Archduke. In 1705 the Alleys took control of the city with the support of the people who lived in the neighboring villages. In August 1708 the French troops attacked the city; the siege lasted for three months and eventually Phillip of Anjou entered the city. Lerida was devastated and a military fortification (the Castle) was built on the hill where the city centre had rested. To the right of the plan we can see a big cartouche with an explanation about the movements of the troops. It is really beautiful, shaped as a shield and embellished by images of wall-related elements. At the top we can see part of a fierce chained bear. Under the text there is a small signature reading J. Basire Sculp. It speaks of the engraver that made this engraving, James Basire, a prestigious English artist that developed a quality work. His father and two sons were also engravers. J. Basire is noted for his maps, battle plans and portraits of famous people; the portrait he engraved with the face of Captain Cook is one of his most famous works. This great engraving is a good simple of Basires work: a detailed and careful battle plan with all the charm provided by its ancient age, more than two hundred years.
