Beautiful engraving made in France in 1820 and with original coloring that depicts the visit of Napoleon to the works made by the French army during the Siege of Danzig (1813). This is a great antique work of art, fully original and that preserves the attractive coloring painted on it after being printed. The engraving is in good condition and comes framed. In the right bottom corner we can see the engravers name: Dequevauviller Sculp. It corresponds to François Nicolas Barthelemy Dequevauviller, a French artist born in 1745 and dead in 1807. The engraving is based in an original painting by a Carle Horace Vernet, printed with the plate masterfully engraved by Dequevauviller. Vernet (1758-1835) was a famous French artist, mainly noted for his battle paintings. Some of his works, especially those related to the campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars, made him highly popular and were later profusely reproduced in engravings. He can be considered one of the first war correspondents in history: during the War of Crimea he accompanied the French army and painted different battles. The scene depicted in this engraving is the Siege of Danzig, a content that took place in 1813 during the War of the Sixth Coalition that fought the Russian and Prussian armies against the French forces. The siege ended when the French surrendered. The engraving is an elegant representation of the visit of emperor Napoleon to the works led by Marshal Le Febvre during the siege. The sketch is elegant and airy, with a wonderfully performed sky and landscape and a good balance of volumes. The original coloring, with a nice palette of red, blue, yellow and ochre, contributes to the excellence of the work.
