This extremely beautiful horn gramophone made in the early 20th century (1910) is a really special article. Its design features a highly attractive balance and a nice combination of wood species that we do not usually find in this kind of reproducers. It is a Thorens gramophone made in Switzerland, and as well as being almost impeccable preserved it works just like new. It provides an excellent sound, neat and clear, and its motor is very silent. The box is made of beech solid wood dyed in a sober mahogany-like dark red color. It shows off a classic and stately style, undoubtedly classy, enhanced by the corner columns and the molded base. Thorens is Swiss company that produces record players and musical reproducers. It was founded in 1883 in Sainte-Croixe, Vaud by Herman Thorens, becoming a family business. In the early times the firm manufactured musical boxes and clock movements, but in 1903 they started producing Edison-type phonographs. With the trace of time Thorens has manufactured different record players; their range of audiophile record players produced in the 1950s and 1960s are regarded as high-end audio equipment. Thorens still produces quality record players for demanding music lovers. This particular gramophone is a good example of the quality of the companys players. The box has two brass details attached to the front and one of the sides, depicting naked children: one of the pieces shows three dancing kids, and the other is composed of four figures playing musical instruments. On the other hand, the reproducer is the original one and bears the inscription EXTRA SONORE CONCERT MADE IN SWITZERLAND. It is attached to the box and the horn by means of a nice set of metal arm and elbow, decorated with fine modernist engravings. Last but not least, the horn is most impressive: made of curved and flat wood, its stylized shape and incredibly condition draw powerfully our attention. Bound to fill with its great sound the best of the rooms, this Thorens gramophone is a magnificent piece whose beauty will leave no collector untouched. Measurements: Box: Width: 47 cm.
