Lovely Pathé Night and Day horn gramophone, made in France in the early 20th century (Circa 1910) and in very good condition. All the component parts have been carefully restored except for the horn, where it has been decided to preserve the gorgeous original green and golden finish. The motor has also been cleaned and tuned so currently the gramophone works great and sounds wonderful. This model is called Night and Day because it can be used in two ways: as horn gramophone and as a table model. When used as a table gramophone it provides a lower and subtler sound; hence its name. Pathé Frères is a French company widely known for its amazing catalogue, including both cinematographers and musical devices. In 1894 Charles Pathé came across the phonograph in the Vincennes fair and was completely fascinated by the invention. One month later he owned his own model and was an exhibitor himself. He became so successful that in 1895 he opened a workshop. In 1896 the four Pathé brothers founded Pathé Frères. Soon two of them withdrew and the company was left in charge of Charles (who became deeply involved in the cinematograph) and Emile, who kept on in the phonograph business. After opening a new shop in Paris, the demand of records and devices grew and the brothers expanded their business founding the Compagnie Générale de Cinématographes, Phonographes et Pellicules. This fantastic gramophone is a good example of the quality, versatility and beauty of Pathé devices. It has a morning glory metal horn with a green and golden finish and quite well preserved. The reproducer is a Pathé Diamond model, connected to the horn and the box by a chromed-metal arm and elbow set. The box is made of solid wood and boasts a simple design, with a speaker at the front which comes into operation when the gramophone is used as a table model. The wood shows off a gorgeous golden reddish color and is protected by a French-polish finish that provides it with a lovely deep glow. This unusual night and day gramophone is an original and exclusive article, perfect for collectors and lovers of musical antiques. Measurements: Box: Side: 12 in / 32 cm.
