Antique gramophone dating from the first years of the 20th century, made by the Gramophone & Typewriter Company Ltd. It is model Monarch 9, which was very popular in its time. The Gramophone & Typewriter Company Ltd. was a leader firm in among those which made that kind of items, and with the trace of time adopted the expression His Masters Voice as their brand name. This took place when the company acquired a picture by F. Barraud that under that name depicted a dog listening to a horn gramophone. This image became the logo that made the company famous all over the world. The gramophone has a beautiful solid oak wooden box, very well preserved. The horn is made of blued metal and shows the classical lobed shape of antique vintage gramophones. The box is golden brown and shows the rich oaks veneer all over its surface. The corners are adorned with carved pillars, whose bases and the capitals are painted black. Three of the four sides have a wooden detail attached to them, carved in the shape of a fan or a scallop flanked by two big leaves. The fourth side has the arm with the reproducer and the horn fixed to it, and bears also a label with the name of the company, the address and the countries where it worked. The logo of the firm, a naked angel carrying a big feather, is also printed on the label. Both the wood and the metal the gramophone is made of are in good condition. All the parts are original, and the reproducer is model EXPRESSION. The gramophone works wonderfully and provides a neat and clear sound; we can scarcely hear the motors noise. It is undoubtedly a great piece, very antique and good-looking, which will delight the most exigent music lover. Measurements: 320 mm width (box) x 700 mm width (with horn) x 560 mm diameter (horns mouth).
