Outstanding antique Extrafon gramophone-phonograph, a very rare model made in Tarragona (Spain) in 1920. This particular unit is in wonderful condition and great working order. The box is made of solid walnut wood; the top and side parts are covered with faux-malachite celluloid plates, almost exclusive of this model. Both the wood and the celluloid are in almost flawless condition. The box is adorned with turned-wooden ebony-finished details and stands on four small circular legs. This machine is listed in Fabrizio's catalogue, "The Talking Machine, an illustrated compendium 1877-1829". It can be seen on the cover of the catalogue and on page 261, in my catalogue. There were two versions, the normal version, with the box covered with yellow celluloid, which is the one shown in the catalogue, and the luxury version, with the box covered with green celluloid, which is the one shown here. The gramophone mounts a swam-neck horn with black-painted-metal body and bronze mouth and arm. The black paint is in good condition and only shows a few slight signs of wear at the top. At the back of the gramophone we can see the curved bronze arm, designed to boost the bass. The turned pieces also bear bronze decorative details. The reproducer or soundbox is an original piece with the name EXTRAFON printed in clear golden lettering. Though the gramophone was made in Spain, the reproducer was manufactured by the Swedish company Maestrophone. This antique and rare Extrafon gramophone will be the starring piece in any living room for its imposing design and excellent sound. Measurements: Box: Width: 40 cm. Height: 24 cm. Total Height: 30.31 in / 77 cm. Horn: Mouths Width: 14.17 in / 30 cm.Extrafon gramophone - History The Extrafon gramophone is a Spanish model directly inspired by the French Aérophone model. It was designed by Antonio Banús, a mechanical engineer who in the 1920s founded the Teledino company in Tarragona, Spain. The firm manufactured radios, gramophones and radio-jukeboxes; they also repaired, rented and sold these items. The Extraphone was in production during the 1920s and 30s.
