Antique Thorens Excelda Gramophone, 2nd version, made in Switzerland in the 1930s and in good condition. This singular device is quite an attractive model, the second version of one of the most popular portable gramophones of those days. It is in good working order and makes it possible to play gramophone records with a neat and clear sound. This is a more evolved model that the first versions, as it includes a side speed indicator. The gramophone is finely preserved though the casings enameled finish is somewhat rusted at the edges, and the arm shows some scratches due to the connecting system. The metal casing that contains the mechanism and acts as a base for the records bears an original crackled-enamel finish in two shades of green. It is a peculiar finish that turns the gramophone into a highly decorative item. The casing preserves the original leather handle in good condition too, with the brand name EXCELDA in embossed lettering. We can also see an original oval riveted metal plate with the inscription PATENTED MADE IN SWITZERLAND. The gramophone comes with a copy of the original instruction booklet in English. Nostalgic and full of charm, this antique Thorens Excelda gramophone (2nd version) is a real collectors item with a very special quality. Measurements: Width: 11.2 in / 28 cm. Depth: 4.8 in / 12 cm. Height: 2 in / 5 cm.Thorens History Thorens is a prestigious company that produces high-end audio equipment. Their phonographs, gramophones and turntables they have been producing from the late 19th century to our days are worldwide renowned. In 1883 Hermann Thorens registered the family business in Saint-Croixe, Switzerland; the company then made and sold music boxes and clock movement (that were still being produced in the 1950s). In 1903 they launched their first Edison-type phonographs and in 1828 produced their first electric (motor-drive) record player. During the 1950s and 60s, Thorens made and sold high-end turntables which are still regarded as high-end audio equipment, and are much sought-after. Nowadays Thorens continues to manufacture amazing record players for vinyl and 78rpm gramophone records.
