Columbia Table Gramophone, 1927

This striking table gramophone is a Grafonola Columbia Viva-Tonal, made in Englando in 1927-28. It is an exclusive piece because of its lovely design, elegance and great condition. The gramophone provides an excellent sound, neat and clear, and can reproduce records with the same quality as the first day of use. Columbia firm was one of the first manufacturers of records, cylinders and musical reproducers, and started launching records and phonographs (as well as cylinder systems) in 1901. In 1912 the company gave up making cylinders and phonographs and started manufacturing records exclusively. In 1925 they entered the electrical recording business and between 1927 and 1936, Columbia decided to make rectified gramophones in order to play the new records.This particular model is a table gramophone that the firm made to reproduce the mentioned new records. This is a Grafonola Viva-Tonal 117a, and its name is printed in bright golden letter inside the lid, being this inscription in perfect condition. The gramophones box is made of solid oak wood, very beautiful and boasting its deep veneer and rich golden tones under the warm original finish. All the components, including the reproducer, are original and let the user listen to records just like when the gramophone was made.Just by the slow-fast indicator located beside the plate we can see a small metal plate screwed to the wood. In this plate we can see an inscription that reads: SYDNEY SCARBOROUGH COLUMBIA DEPOT UNDER THE CITY HALL, HULL. This is one more detail that testifies for this magnificent gramophones authenticity. Moreover the device keeps the original crank that operates the motor, as well as the two adjustable front doors. These pieces are two longitudinal wooden planks that can be opened or shut to a greater or lesser extent.
