Magnificent Phrynis horn gramophone in perfect working order. Switzerland, Ca. 1915

This stunning horn gramophone is a rare and special piece, a model manufactured in Switzerland under the Phrynis market name circa 1915. Two features draw our attention: its spectacular restaured condition and its magnificent sound. Both the box and the horn have been carefully restored so the gramophone boasts the great look it deserves. On the other hand, it sounds wonderfully: the motor is quite silent and the sound comes out neat and clear. The combination of the boxs golden brown color and the dark green enamel that covers the horn turn this article into a very decorative and impressive piece. Attached to one of the boxs sides there is a plate with the following inscription: PHRYNIS CH &J.U. Barcelona-Paris. The Phrynis market name is related to the gramophones made by John Jaccard in St. Croix (Switzerland) for Charles & Jacques Ullmann Co (the names corresponding to the initials in the plate) from Paris. Their commercial relationship started in the 1890s. With the trace of time, the Ullmann brothers melted with the International Talking Machines of Berlin. In 1906 they started manufacturing their own gramophones under the Phrynis brand, though they still included pieces made by Jaccard. This particular model was clearly for the Spanish market, having being distributed in Barcelona. The gramophones box is made of solid oak wood and its beautiful color is enhanced by the glow of the French polish. Attached to the box we can see a metal piece that holds the arm with the reproducer and the horn. The reproducer is the original Phrynis one and bears a fine modernist illustration that makes a clear difference with similar pieces of the time. The gorgeous metal horn is quite impressive, made of lobed metal sheet and with a shiny dark green enameled finish.
