Fantastic Sikes Deluxe Hydrometer Manufactured by the Blake Brand in the 19th century. Beautiful rectangular box in mahogany wood with the maker's inscription on a small cream-colored top plate: Sikes' Hydrometer. Blake; 58 Hatton Garden, London. This mark can also be found engraved on the essential parts of the hygrometer, which attests that they are all original and genuine. Black velvet interior where the different parts that make up this magnificent piece are distributed in an orderly manner. The hydrometer and the balance weights in polished lacquered copper are accompanied by a mercury thermometer and the boxwood slide rule. The hydrometer scale is engraved with divisions from 0 to 10, subdivided into fifths. It is accompanied in perfect symmetry by 10 weights, 9 of them graduated from 10 to 90 and a calibration cap. All weights are engraved with "Blake" on one side and "1880" on the other. None of them are missing, something very important to take into account in this type of pieces. The case has a small scratch on the lid, almost unnoticeable. This piece is complete, in perfect condition, and is a true marvel. The hygrometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the density of liquids and their specific gravity. The purpose is to determine the specific gravity of a liquid. The Sikes hydrometer was, for many years, the standard means of determining the degree of humidity. Thomas Odempsey Blake worked from the end of the 19th century until 1947 at at least three different addresses: 57, 58 and 40 Hatton Garden; hence we find different numbers on the plates accompanying his pieces.
