This wonderful antique item is a Sikes hydrometer set made in England circa 1900 and in its wooden case. It is an ancient instrument, complete and in excellent condition. Sikes hydrometers were used to calculate the alcohol proportion of the different liquors; depending on the proportion, the producer had to pay a defined tax. The calculation was made determining the specific gravity of the liquids. The set that we can see in the images is composed of a glass recipient and a series of brass accessories (a ruler with a sphere and a weigh set), all of them with no traces of rust or wear. It also includes a thermometer with the intact original mercury ampoule. The hydrometer set comes in its original case, a gorgeous solid-mahogany box with a fine French-polish finish, artisanal dovetail joints and a non-engraved brass plate embedded at the top. Inside it is covered by red satin and dark red velvet, both greatly preserved too. This antique Sikes hydrometer set will stand out for its great condition and fascinating duty. It is a very special piece, perfect for a collection of curious old-time instruments. Measurements (Case): Width: 5.82 in / 14.8 cm. Depth: 4.09 in / 10.4 cm.
