Gorgeous mantel clock made of solid wood with hand-carved details and metal marquetry inlays. This clock is a highly attractive piece because of the detailed carving work that has been performed in the wooden box, and the profusion of metal marquetry motives that make such a nice contrast with the brownish color of the wood. The clock works perfectly and chimes the hours and the halves, and is very good condition too. The wood is protected by a warm finish that enhances its color and veneer, providing it with a wonderful satin glow. The clocks movement has been fully fine-tuned to guarantee a good working order. At the back of the box there is a small door that lets us reach the mentioned movement, with the serial number 12227 clearly engraved in the metal. Over the number there is a partially deleted inscription with only a star-shaped logo and the capital letters S, J and D remaining. The metal surface also bears a circular mark with the inscription MEDAILLE DE BRONZE S Martin et Cie. The clocks face is directly mounted on the wooden box, framed by a brass ring and with lacquered golden metal Roman numbers and hands. It also bears the brand name printed in golden lettering, though almost completely deleted, and the name of the French city Bordeaux. But surely the most remarkable feature of this clock, as well as the beautiful hand-carved volutes and classic details, are the Boulle-style marquetry inlays that decorate it. Made of silvery metal on a black background, they depict classic volutes and floral motives whose style anticipates the Modernism. This amazing mantel clock is a real find because of its intrinsic beauty, ancient age and excellent working order. Measurements: Width: 20 in/51 cm. Height: 12.9 in/33 cm.
