This curious item is an oil clock, also known as silent clock. It is a piece made in the 19th century, in excellent condition and working order. The clock is actually an oil lamp, stylized and decorative, with a glass deposit on top. This deposit is designed to contain the fuel that feeds the flame. The metal is in good condition and looks shiny and even, with scarcely any scratches or signs of wear. As for the glass deposit, it is the original one; in spite of being more than one hundred years old, it has survived to our days in great condition. Oil clocks are ingenious devices used long ago by those who wished to know the time but could not afford a mechanical clock. These clocks were usually filled with whale oil, quite appreciate for its slow burning. This model bears a glass deposit but there were others that mounted translucent porcelain ampoules.
