Elegant Junghans Mantel Clock with Solid Wood Case. Germany, 19th Century

This lovely mantel clock is an antique model made by the prestigious Junghans clockmaker company in the 19th century. The clocks movement has been fully checked, cleaned and fine-tuned so today the clock works wonderfully. The hand-carved wooden box is also in optimal condition: it has been restored too in order to boast the amazingly good look that we can appreciate in the photographs. The box is made of solid walnut wood and is designed as a small temple, and the carvings that embellish it are of neoclassical in style. The clocks face bears black Roman numbers and iron filigree hands. Under number XII we can see the printed logo of the manufacturer, Junghans. The company was founded in 1851 by Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, in Schramberg (Germany). With the trace of the years the firm grew progressively and eventually became one of the most important clock-making brands in the word. Their clocks are renowned for their high quality and fine design, and some of them are part of the collections of great museums such as the MOMA in New York. Today, Junghans is still active as a multinational corporation with different action fields. The clocks box boasts an impressive beauty and a great elegance. With a classic and architectural style, it is profusely decorated with carved moldings, pillars, decorative motives and pinnacles. Under the clocks face we can see a decorative motive with a brass detail in the center. These brass details are orderly and symmetrically disposed all over the clocks front side, and are six in total. The top part is especially beautiful; it is shaped like a roof and we can see the shingles delicately engraved in the wood surface. There is also a series of balusters that make up a railing. Finally, three stylized wooden pinnacles crown the whole piece. This antique Junghans clock is bound to reign on the shelf or sideboard of the most stately and luxurious dining room.
