Elegant Antique Mantel Clock with Alabaster Case. France, 19th Century

Beautiful antique mantel clock with alabaster box and golden-brass decorative details, in great condition and in working order. The clock was made in France in the 19th century and is in an almost impeccable condition. The alabaster box shows no cracks, dents or worn parts, something uncommon in antique pieces made of this material. The stones white surface is enhanced by the golden-brass details that decorate the clock and provide its design with a stately and luxurious look. The clocks movement has been checked and cleaned in order to guarantee a good working order. The back of the case lets us reach the movement. It bears the engraved manufacturers mark with the name JAPY FRERES inside. This was a prestigious French clockmaker company that kept active for more than two hundred years. The company started out in 1771 in Beaucourt, France founded by Georges Frederic Japy as a family business. With the trace of time the firm grew and employed around 300 people. The movements made by Japy Freres are renowned for their quality and precision. As well as the manufacturers mark, we can also see the serial number 1691 engraved in the metal. The clock boasts a clearly neoclassical design with an architectural shape and inspired in the Greco-Roman period. The clocks box stands on a rectangular base supported by four small brass legs. The face is the main feature, with golden-brass Roman numbers and hands. Its alabaster background bears two engraved words, GAUDRY and ORLEANS. Two symmetrical volutes flank the box and a gorgeous alabaster and brass cup crowns the clock. Under the face, the base is embellished by a lovely brass detail with two fine intertwined flowery garlands. The successful material combination and the wonderful design of this antique clock turn it into a charming and beautiful piece, more than one hundred years old.
