Great French Monumental Clock in Marble and Bronze. Last third of XIX Century. Working

Spectacular big French clock made in a monumental style. It is made of black marble, patina-finished bronze and golden bronze, and its elegant and solid beauty is very remarkable. This clock is also a very antique item which dates from the 19th century, circa 1880. The clock chimes every hour and half hour. The two rectangular pieces which made up the base are made of black marble, while the smart figure which rests on them (which seem to represent a classical Greek philosopher or wise man) is made of bronze with a patina finish. Last but not least, the volute-shaped details and the floral garland which decorate the base are made of golden bronze. The contrast between the black marble and the golden tones of the metal, together with the big dimensions of the clock, are the most remarkable features of this striking piece. The black marble shows its deep stony color. The trace of time has left some cracks and dents on the marbles surface, but these do not decrease the clocks great beauty. And speaking of beauty, we can only emphasize the magnificent sculpture which crowns the clock. It is wonderful because of its proportions, the faces fine expression and the nice details: the clothes folds, the arms movement, the curled hair, the broken column at the foot of the figure The man is holding a sheet of paper with his right hand; this hand is resting on a Greek inscription flanked by two laurel leaves. The clock works perfectly and has been adjusted and revised. The face is in very good condition: is made of white porcelain with black numbers, and shows no hairs or damages. The machinery is also well preserved and at the rear we can see the letters S R engraved on the metal. Under them we can also see the number 235. It we turn the clock upside down, we can see the masons stamp with the following inscription: MUDESSE MARBRIER BREVETÉ PARIS surrounded by the artisans address. This great clocks is a wonderful piece which deserves a place of honor in the most elegant house. Measurements: 465 mm width x 630 mm height.
