Antique gilt Calamine Mantel Clock with Garnish. France, 1870

Antique gilt calamine mantel clock and garniture made in France in 1870. This fine set comprises two side twin urns with their respective pedestals. The clock is in fine working order the movement has not been cleaned but shows an optimal performance. The three pieces are made of gold-painted calamine, a material that faithfully imitates the appearance of ormolu. They are all decorated with striking porcelain details. The clock has an amplie rectangular base embellished with an embossed classic border and a front porcelain detail, a delicate hand-painted bouquet on an ultramarine background. Over the base, the circular dial has black Roman numerals in white porcelain medals on a background of the same color. In the center of the dial there is a white circle with a colorful floral motif. The Louis XV hands are made of black metal. On both sides of the dial we can see oval porcelain panels with colored figures depicting dancing women. Crowning the clock we can see an imposing porcelain and calamine urn with the same decoration as the base panel. The movement is signed by JAPY FILS. The twin lidded urns that make up the garniture are as gorgeous and spectacular as the clock itself. The neoclassic-style pedestals are embellished with square-shaped porcelain panels with the same floral motifs and color range (ultramarine, white, green and pink) as the clocks panels. Over the pedestals we can see the urns, two stylized porcelain pieces with ultramarine-painted base and white body decorated with floral bouquets. One of the urns shows some restorations that in no way interfere with the powerful beauty of the set. Both pieces mount delicate golden calamine handles and lids.
