Antique Mantel Clock in Gilded Bronze. Virgin of the Chair. France, 1870

Imposing antique ormolu mantel clock with a representation of the picture The Madonna of the Chair (Madonna della Seggiola) painted by the Renaissance artist Rafael Sanzio. The clock comes from France and is dated in 1870, remaining in great condition. The movement is signed by Martí & Cie and is in perfect working order, after having been cleaned and fine-tuned. The case is pyramidal in shape, with an ample rectangular neoclassic-style base supported by four curved legs. The legs are decorated with embossed scallops, the same motif depicted in the frontal decorative scene. Over this motif we can see a detail composed of cherub heads. The top part of the clock is a magnificent sculptural work made of cast bronze. The reproduction of the scene painted by Sanzio shows just the figures of the Madonna and the Child. The Virgin sits on a rock, near to a big book. Her dress covers part of the rock and lets us see her feet in sandals. The bronze fabric is wonderfully molded and its delicate folds look just like the real ones. The Virgin has baby Jesus on her lap and they embrace each other, while looking directly to the watchers eyes with placid faces. Over the Virgins shoulders we can see a detailed shawl with fine fringes and prints, beautifully and precisely performed. Under this gorgeous sculpture we can see the circular dial, made of white-enameled metal and with black Roman numerals. The stylized hands are black too. At the back of the clocks case we can see a small circular metal door that lets us reach the movement. If we open it we will find the manufacturers mark with the inscription MEDAILLE DE BRONZE - Martí & Cie. Medaille de Bronze was the brand name under which the company sold their movements; it was active between 1867 and 1889.
