The clock is settled on a rectangular base decorated with diagonal shapes of different wood tones and an elegant mother-of-pearl bird inlaid in the centre. The clock case has a unique octagonal shape on the sides flanked by two spiral shapes topped with mother-of-pearl diamond inlays. The face is black, its shows roman numbers in gilded bronze, and the arms are spade-like. The machinery, Paris-like, lasts eight days chiming at oclock hours and at half hours too. It brings the key, all parts are the original, there are no traces of damage and it seems like new. In the back we can see a screwed plaque with the inscription "Liege, 1890. Made for Nicolas Albert " which indicates the location and date of the piece. The first clocks, were made with weights, they need to be hanged into the wall. With the invention of the spring mechanism in the seventeenth century it was possible to pick it up and move them to other places. These early clocks were not found in France until 1750, and had to wait a decade to be consolidated in England. They were commonly called "fireplace clocks" because they were located in the common place of the house, around which the whole family sit together. The designs would evolve from the more baroque forms to the more classical as in this example. From 1830 on, it became fashionable to locate two ornaments or pieces in the same style of the clock that were placed at both sides of it. This is an elegant clock made by expert hands for decorating and filling any room style.Size: 36 X 43 X 16.5 cm (clock) 16.5 cm diameter sphere, 27 x 14 cm (garniture).
