Important Antique Otto Herkt Globe with Vintage Cartography. Germany, 1900

Great antique world globe made in Germany in 1900 and in quite good condition. This is a big-sized piece (23.6 in / 60 cm height) and is a beautiful and interesting article for its ancient age and imposing presence. The globe preserves the original covering which is complete and with perfectly-visible mappings. It shows the continents as they were divided in the early 20th century we can see reigns and nations which no longer exist, long-gone frontiers and old-time places. The names of countries and regions are in German; the globe also shows the names of the most important cities. At the top of the piece we can see a printed inscription with the German articles name (ERDGLOBUS), its diameter and the manufacturers name, OTTO HERKT. The globe is colorfully printed, with the nations boasting green, red, yellow, blue etc. colors. The names are printed in black and grey. We can also see the parallels and meridians, and the brass arch that supports the globe bears an engraved scale. The mapping is quite remarkable for the presence of antique colonies such as the French Africa and the British India. We can also see the ancient Austro-Hungarian Empire; Greece was just a part of Turkey and Poland does not exist as its territory belonged to Russia. The surface shows some changes of tone and signs of the trace of time, but these details only increase its charm and authenticity and do not interfere at all in the contemplation of the maps. The globe is attached to a solid beech wooden stand, turned and dyed in a beautiful walnut tone. It bears a protecting transparent finish that provides it with a warm satin glow. The arch that supports the globe is made of golden brass and looks great, shiny and polished. At the stands base we can see a drilled hole with a small compass inside, and another gap that contains a measuring tape under a translucent cover.
