Big case made of mahogany wood and containing a wide set of operation instruments for surgical uses. The case and its contents are British made and date from the early 20th century, circa 1900. The set is almost complete and only a piece is missing (a pair of tongs). The set is composed of scissor-type tongs in different sizes, scalpels of all types, tongs, saws and every kind of tools for surgical operations. Many utensils bear marks and inscriptions engraved in the metal that speak for their origin and quality. The cases lock has also an engraved inscription that reads BRITISH MADE. Beside it we can see an inlay plate with the manufacturers address: Giltspur St. London. The case is very beautiful. Made of solid mahogany wood, it preserves the original brass corner reinforces (two pieces in each corner). It also keeps the metal shutting hooks located on both sides, the original hinge and the key that operates the lock. The wood boasts a warm shiny finish that enhances the lovely golden red tone of the mahogany. In the center of the cases top we can see an inlaid shield-shaped brass plate with the inscription OPERATION INSTRUMENTS. Inside the case is fully partitioned and there is a place for every tool and utensil. It is covered by the original vintage dark red velvet, quite well preserved. The gaps for the utensils located inside the lid have mobile brass plates that keep the tools in place and prevent them from falling when the case is open. The set also contains two small paper envelopes, one with scalpel blades and the other with needles for sutures. We are looking at a great piece of high interest for surgeons and collectors: a striking museum-like set of operation instruments.Measurements: Width: 450 mm. Depth: 170 mm.
