This metal instrument is a therapeutic scarifier, a tool used to cut the patients skin and let it bleed. This article was made in Germany in the late 19th century: it has survived to our days in excellent condition and working order. The scarifier has twelve small blades that are set free by operating the lever. When put on the patients skin, the blades cut it in a superficial manner and let the blood out. Scarifiers have been commonly used for centuries; nowadays, western medicine does not consider bloodletting an efficient therapy. The one we can see in this images bears the inscription P.A. STOSS NACHE WIESBADEN engraved in the metal, indicating the place of making. Because of its original quality and good condition, this scarifier deserves to be exhibited in a showcase containing quality medical antiques. Measurements: Width: 1.27 in / 4.7 cm.
