This simple article is an antique stethoscope, a demountable tool designed to carry it comfortably. The one we can see in these images is made of fruitwood and dates from the 19th century, being a fascinating medical antique in excellent condition. The stethoscope is composed of two parts: a funnel-shaped base with three holes (one on top and two at the sides) and a slightly conical hollow rod. In order to use it the doctor only has to insert the rod into the top hole and put the base on the patients chest. He or she will listen to the sounds by pressing his or her ear against the rods wider end. When not in use, the stethoscope can be dismantled and the rod inserted through the side holes. The stethoscope was invented in 1816 by the French physician René Laënned; it is believed that he designed it to avoid putting his ear directly to his patients chests. As curious as interesting, this delicate wooden stethoscope deserves to shine in a complete showcase of medical antiques. Measurements: Width: 2.3 in / 6 cm. Length: 7 in / 18 cm.
