Antique Thoracic Anatomical Model. Germany, Circa 1950

Superb antique thoracic cavity model made in Germany circa 1950, complete and in excellent condition. These articles are commonly used for teaching purposes, but also in medical uses (consultation, conferences etc.). In the 18th century they were usually made of wax, but this material caused problems in hot conditions. In the 19th century the manufacturers started using papier mache, a paste made of wet cardboard or paper. The paste was easy to manipulate, and once painted and varnished became quite hard. The model that we can see in the photographs reproduces faithfully all the organs inside the thoracic cavity: lungs, heart, trachea, veins, arteries The organs can be removed one by one in order to be individually studied, and can be dismantled in different parts. They are all in optimal condition, showing off a realistic colorful finish with a remarkable attention to detail. This antique thoracic cavity model will stand out in a good collection of medical antiques or in a well-decorated doctors office. Measurements: Width: 12 in / 30 cm. Height: 16 in / 40 cm.
