Big-sized antique surgery set by Evans & Co, made in England in the 19th century and with a great number of ancient instruments. The storing case is big and contains two removable trays; all the elements are in good condition. It is shaped as a suitcase and is made of solid mahogany wood, with a top metal handle and original shutting hooks. The wood is finely preserved; there are some darkened parts at the top, a natural feature considering the articles ancient age. Nevertheless, the mahogany is in good condition and looks really fine. Inside the case is covered of well-preserved purple velvet. The case contains two trays: a big one with saws, knife and a hand-drill and a smaller one with a black-leather sleeve containing a set of tweezers, spatulas, scalpels and other medical instruments. Under these trays we find more tools: scissor-handle tweezers, hooks, punches etc. The instruments are made of steel and bear the word EVANS engraved at the metal. It stands for John Evans & Co., a renowned manufacturer of surgery instruments which was active in London between 1676 and 1874. The case contains many instruments, though the set is not complete. They are all original from the period and have survived to our days in fine condition. The tools stored in the leather sleeve bear natural-tortoiseshell handles, finely preserved too. The knives and saws stored in the top tray bear black wooden handles. All of them preserve the great charm of Victorian surgery and medical instruments; this was probably the period when this set was made and used.
